In late summer 1766, "bêtes féroces" attacked inhabitants of several parishes in the Sarladais region. Earlier in the year, a rabid wolf had already caused several deaths in Vieux-Mareuil. Printed reports, parish registers and administrative correspondence help to trace these events and the measures taken, particularly in terms of health, by the sub-delegates of the Intendant of Guyenne.
