Le Village de la Madeleine
Folk art and traditions, Cave dwellers site
in Tursac
-
Located in a loop in the Vézère, north of Eyzies, the troglodyte village of Madeleine is one of the best examples of the long tradition of human occupation in this area of Périgord Noir.
The prehistoric deposit is found at the foot of the cliff. It has particular stone and bone tools and many works of art which have enabled the definition of a new period in the evolution of Cro-Magnon, which it has given its name to, the Magdalenian culture.

The prehistoric deposit is found at the foot of the cliff. It has particular stone and bone tools and many works of art which have enabled the definition of a new period in the evolution of Cro-Magnon, which it has given its name to, the Magdalenian culture.
Certainly from the 8th century, a population settled in what was then the height of comfort and safety. The ruins of a fairly large fortified castle illustrate the defensive aspects of the site.
The inhabitants abandoned the site some years later with the growing popularity of the gas engine and the development of the railway and then returned, following age-old tradition.
